Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery Business continuity is a corproate responsibility. It is not only good management but is a requirement on many organisations through lesislation such as the Civil Contingencies Act. The need to plan strategies to cope with interruptions to services has been demonstrated time and time again, indeed recent studies have suggested that over 80% of organisations which suffer a major "disaster" without having effective continuity and recovery plans go out of business within the next 12 months. In order to develop robust plans an organisation must identify those activities which are critical to the achievement of its core objectives and then fully understand the impact of these activities being "unavailable", the dependencies that these activities rely upon and the likelihood of adverse events. Only then can effective plans be built to respond to crises, continue critical activites at an acceptable level and, ultimately recover to business as usual. The development of an effective Business Continuity and Recovery Plan is a major undertaking for any organisation requiring approrpriate skills and resources.
